Salem Family Health Center receives $1 Million in funding for New Building

Rep. Seth Moulton sponsored Community Partner Funding in appropriation bill passed by Congress

SALEM, Mass. – March. XX, 2022 – Salem Family Health Center (SFHC), a division of North Shore Community Health (NSCH), has received $1M towards a new site in downtown Salem. The new location will be at the corner of Derby and Lafayette Streets and be adjacent to new low-income senior housing which will be developed and managed by the North Shore Community Development Corporation (NSCDC).

On March 10th, Congress passed an appropriations bill which included Community Partner Funding for the site and additional support for the Ukraine. “We want to thank Rep. Moulton, Senators Warren and Markey for their support. It’s really heartening to see the recognition that our work and our patients matter.” –Maggie Brennan, President and CEO. She continued, “The new health center will allow us to provide more critical services in a state-of-the-art facility because our patients deserve better access to quality care and facilities.”

A substantial demand exists for additional primary care, dental, and behavioral health in the North Shore. Despite the need, SFHC struggles to provide same-day appointment access due largely to lack of space. In addition to the services it already provides, the new SFHC will include urgent care services which will be open to the community.  MassHealth claims data indicates that patients would significantly benefit from access to these services, including X-rays, to prevent long waits at the Emergency Department at MGB Salem. The new building will include space for medical and dental care, urgent care, and behavioral health services.

NSCH’s mission is to build healthy communities by providing exceptional care to all. Since 1977, NSCH has been the primary source of healthcare for a diverse population of low-income, medically underserved, uninsured, and under-insured service area residents.

For nearly 30 years, NSCH has operated the Salem Family Health Center, located at 47 Congress Street.  The 12,000sf of leased clinical space houses family medicine, women’s health, behavioral health (including psychiatry), dental, substance abuse treatment, care coordination for patients with chronic diseases, pharmacy, insurance enrollment assistance, and health education.
