Run Strong, Smile Strong: Simple Oral Health Tips for Runners
I’ve been a runner for almost 50 years (these days, more of a jogger), and I still love how good movement can make you feel. Along with training your body, a few smart habits can help you keep your smile comfortable, healthy, and ready for every mile.
The good news: with a little prevention, runners and other athletes can protect their teeth and gums for the long haul. A 2015 systematic review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine reported that across studies, 36–85% of elite athletes showed signs of dental erosion and 15–75% had tooth decay. Other research suggests higher rates of periodontal (gum) disease, and about a third of athletes say oral health issues can affect performance. The takeaway is simple: small, consistent choices can make a meaningful difference.
Here’s an easy, runner-friendly routine to help keep your mouth in great shape:
- Choose water most of the time. If you use gels or sports drinks on longer runs, a good rinse (and extra sips of water) helps your teeth bounce back.
- Keep the basics consistent. Brush 2–3 times/day and floss daily—simple steps that really add up.
- Give your enamel a little time. Wait about an hour before brushing after a run, acidic drinks, or acid reflux—this helps reduce enamel wear.
- Ask about extra protection. Your dentist can recommend fluoride and remineralizing products (including prescription fluoride toothpaste when appropriate).
- Stay on top of checkups. Twice-yearly visits help spot early changes so you can address them quickly.
I feel fortunate—I haven’t had a new cavity in almost 50 years, and I’m convinced that consistency is a big part of it. If you’re training for your next race (or just aiming to feel your best), the Dental Division of North Shore Community Health is here to support you in keeping your smile healthy for the long run.
